Rationale: The Hot Seat Strategy is a great strategy for getting students to interact with text at a deeper level while bringing the text to life.Using the Hot Seat helps students see events or people from different perspectives, explore real life issues, and question text.I also like this strategy because it is interactive, and gives students opportunities to explore topics, events, or characters through oral communication. This is especially important for ELLS who need to work on oral communication.
Courses in which it could be implemented:
This strategy works really well in social studies. I have used it to explore social issues, historical events, and even concepts like economy and agricultural.
Diverse learners:
This strategy is a great strategy for ELLs as I mentioned above because it promotes oral communication skills. Also, this strategy is great for students who love drama and expressing themselves through drama.Last, this strategy is good for students who are auditory learners.
Procedure:
1. Teacher selected a piece of text for students to “hotseat” with.
2. Teacher may choose to pick the people the students will “become” in the hotseat, or students can pick them in their groups.
3. Students fill out their hotseat planning guide.
4. One student from each group sits in the hotseat and takes the role of their assigned person.
5. The rest of their group begins the conversation by asking the questions their group had written for the person.
6. Then the rest of the class can ask the person questions.
7. The teacher should contribute questions to guide the questions into more higher level questions.
Potential Issues:
Problem:
Possible Solutions:
Students may have problems getting into role.
·Teacher can guide questions to help the student out. ·Teacher can model the hotseat.
Students may ask questions that are irrelevant.
·Teacher can bring questions back on course by intervening with questions.
